Eat the Rainbow - The compounds that create the natural colours in our foods are often nutritious vitamins and minerals. Eating a range of colourful fruits and vegetables is a great way to include lots of different nutrients in our diets. Can you make a snack with at least three different naturally-occurring colours?

Pollinator Tour- Most of the foods we eat exist because of hard-working pollinators! Take a tour of the school yard or surrounding neighbourhood to explore the local pollinators. Annual vs. Perennial- Some of our favorite plants are planted once and return year after year (perennials), while others have a shorter growing cycle and don’t tolerate the Saskatchewan winter, so must be replanted each spring (annuals). Explore the school yard or surrounding neighbourhood to observe the plants and make an inference of whether they are annual or perennial. What about crops?

Community Clean-up- Farmers work hard to care for the land that they live, work and play on. What can you do to take care of the land that you are on?

Beneficial Insect Safari- Not everyone is a big fan of bugs, but did you know that many insects have an important, helpful role? Explore the outdoors to find beneficial insects helping by pollinating, aerating, eating pests and more!

Adventure Snack- many people have favorite foods, some people have foods they aren’t fond of, and practically all of us have a food we’ve never tried. Take a ‘snack’ on the wild side and try a food that you have never tasted before. Don’t forget to keep an open mind!

Foundations of SK Agriculture- a series of interactive courses and information sheets that invite students to explore the different crops and animals raised in Saskatchewan. Food Waste Pledge- Did you know that Canadians waste up to 2.2 million tonnes of edible food each year? Wasting food also wastes the resources that were needed to grow, process, and transport the food. Most of the wasted food is in the form of fruits, vegetables, and leftovers. What can you do to help reduce the food you waste? Come up with one action item and make a pledge to reduce wasted food. Food Waste Poster- Now that you have made a change to waste less food, help spread the word! Create a poster that educates the school community about why it’s important to reduce food waste and suggest an action that others could take to waste less food.

Waste Free Lunch- Now that you’ve found ways to waste less food, think about the other waste that is created by our lunches. Pre-packaged foods are convenient and often tasty but create a lot of additional garbage. Try packing a lunch of all your favorites, avoiding single-use packaging. You’ll be less likely to waste food if you love the foods that are packed, and re-usable containers help to reduce the amount of garbage that is created. Double win!

Water Conservation Walk- Whether a plant, animal or microbe, living things can’t survive for long without water.  Water is a precious resource so it is important that we all do our part to conserve water and to keep our waterways clean. Take a walk in your neighbourhood to see what kinds of local water conservation efforts are in place.

Water Conservation Pledge- What kinds of examples of water conservation in your community have you seen? What can you do to help conserve water? Come up with an action item that you are willing to commit to and make a pledge to conserve water at home, at school, or in your community.

Water Conservation Poster- Now that you have seen what your community is doing to conserve water and you have come up with an action of your own, it’s time to spread the word! Create a poster for your school or neighbourhood to encourage others to join the water conservation effort.
